Hampi, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and described as a “highly evolved multi-religious and multi-ethnic society”, is an ancient city of ruins situated in the south India state of Karnataka . A unique landscape with a lot of historical relevance, it ranked #2 on Lonely Planet’s ‘Must Visit Destinations’ of 2019. However, lack of long term grass roots level policies has prevented Hampi from reaching its true tourism potential. Moreover, human development indices there, such as healthcare, education, employment and equal opportunities do not meet optimal standards.
Our project, Rebuild Hampi: Rural Development Based on Sustainable Tourism, is a multiple stakeholder approach involving local players. In addition to addressing various quality of life parameters, our mission is to put Hampi on everyone’s bucket list, and create a sustainable tourism industry, on which the local community can thrive. And you can be the change makers to help us achieve that!

Roles available:
A lot of exciting work awaits! You will be required to study the local culture and heritage of Hampi. Using your new-found knowledge of local architecture, you will get to redesign existing houses and other facilities to convert them into homestays and cafes!
With your skills and unique viewpoints, you will be able to assist locals realise their visions for their properties. You will be beautifying their establishments, thus making businesses more appealing from a hospitality and tourism perspective.
A huge opportunity for business-related fields! Individuals will help homestay owners by assisting in their daily business operations in addition to formulating sustainable business models. Think of it as your own startup.
The entire project is primarily based on developing the tourism industry, with hospitality skills are at the core of. You will provide training in this field to the locals. Not to mention, personal development.

Responsible for adding the finishing touches to the vehicles! Use your imagination to increase the face value of these ‘fun rides’; take your most creative ideas and turn them into reality.
Time to put your skills to the test! Follow appropriate engineering techniques to design, assemble and build electric autos and their charging units. You will also use your technical knowledge to train the drivers to charge and maintain these units.

Travel back in time, as you witness an outdated sanitation map which was designed back in 2006 by the United Nations. Implement the plan, and upgrade if required. Become a part of a widespread plan to repaint the village walls and raise awareness for better sanitation.
Apply what you learned at college and from your various mentors as you work towards improving the sanitation system. Implement new ideas or improve conventional ones like waste composting, biogas power generation, reducing vehicle emissions.
Individuals with a background in education and teaching will be responsible for leading outreach campaigns for health and hygiene awareness. You will need to do this through unique educational methodologies so that there is a lasting impact amongst the local community.

You will conduct historical case studies of the farming industry as a whole, and learn about the slowdown in the local industry. Draw up new models, routes to market and sustainable supply chains.
Responsibilities will involve building a variety of different agricultural technologies. Anything from soil composition systems, to water conservation structures for farmers such as grassed waterways, grade stabilisation structures, flood prevention dams, terraces, animal waste and housing facilities.
Individuals with experience in agricultural science are essential for this project to succeed. You will introduce newer and more efficient methods of organic farming which will ensure sustenance farming in addition to boosting income from agriculture.

We need artists and designers to provide students with lessons on art and design in the form of workshops and after school lessons. Additionally, you will also be beautifying school premises to encourage creativity and holistic development.
With your experience, training, and passion for education, you will be responsible for equipping the local teachers with new teaching and monitoring techniques to improve their proficiency. You will also encourage the students to take up extracurricular activities and promote wellness through various ‘‘outside the classroom’’ programs and activities.

Whether you are an economist, a banker, a consultant or a student, use your analytical, marketing and business development skills to create a model for this initiative, all while making sure that the participating businesses reap the benefits.
Architecture fanatics will be responsible for consulting with the local community based on their business interests and sustainably design food, crafts and other stalls and kiosks items that showcase local heritage and culture.
A great opportunity to show your creative flair! Through this initiative, you will help the participating creative businesses by developing a wide variety of authentic products, in addition to designing their stalls and kiosks.
Rebuild Hampi has multiple initiatives which possesses scope for individuals from multiple disciplines to your skills, passion, experience or a simple motivation to learn
Good exposure for individuals willing to know more about hospitality as a sector. You start at the extreme grassroots level. As you convert homes into homestays and cafes; understand the concept of hospitality, and teach it to the locals.
You will be training the locals on how to sell products and services in the Santhe Market. You will be in-charge of food stalls, and other shops where the business has to be very people-interactive.
In this initiative, you have a major role to play. You will be in charge of creating technologies that generate electricity, using alternative sources of energy such as renewable motor grids, solar lighting microenterprises, biogas plants, hydropower, and any other ideas which you can bring to the table.
You will build and introduce innovative agro-tech such as grassed waterways, grade stabilisation structures, flood prevention dams, terraces, animal waste, and housing facilities to support the local farmers and improve their agricultural output.
Improve Hampi’s sanitation mechanisms by implementing new ideas to improve on conventional methods. Think waste composting, biogas power generation, and reducing vehicle emissions. Help draw up new sanitation and drainage maps and design various other facilities.
Build your portfolios by using appropriate engineering techniques to design, assemble, and build electric autos and their charging units.
You will be providing business development workshops and skills to the women of Hampi, setting up their hospitality businesses and ensuring operations run smoothly. Join us, learn something new, and teach us what you know.
Build a microenterprise from scratch. It can be a women’s co-operation, a local social enterprise, tourism related businesses, introducing community currencies or even setting up an ecommerce business.
Also known as ‘The evening market’, you will be responsible for monitoring each business’s operation, designing their business plans and creating a marketing strategy for the market itself, to attract more visitors.
This project gives you an opportunity to create a case study on the overall farming industry and establishing farming cooperatives. Troubleshoot the ideas, minimise problems, and apply your analytical skills in a real-life scenario.
This particular project offers you freedom of expression, by allowing you to renovate existing Hampi houses into homestays and cafes based on an in depth study of the local culture and heritage and recommendation by the owners.

You will find plenty of opportunity to create local authentic handicrafts and products for the artisans, helping them with new ideas. At the same time, you get to learn their trade, a prime example of mutual benefit.
Would it not be great if you were able to create products and sell them in a foreign destination? And this for a social cause. Work alongside local artisans, and get new products to the local market, and see it for yourself if you are any good at sales.
Another initiative from our side to test your imaginations. You will breathe new life into outdated and newly assembled electric autos with your creativity. Your work will be seen everywhere on the streets of Hampi.
Attach your professional skills to an environmental cause. An off-beat project, which definitely piques people’s interest. Paint village walls and other facilities (NO GRAFFITI), and tackle problems related to health and hygiene from a different angle.
Foray into education, give back to the community. Teach children the basics of design and art, through workshops and after-school lessons. You will make some fond memories as you encourage students to take extra-curricular, a practice which currently lacks importance in the schools of Hampi!
Time to put your education, experience or hobby to the test. Get involved in a real-life scenario, as you help the farming community of Hampi. Analyse local conditions, recommend various types of crops, and suitable methods and technologies to facilitate the local farmers with improved agricultural productivity.

Link yourselves to an environmental cause. You will have the opportunity to come up with campaigns that make the community cleaner and more responsive to their health and hygiene requirements. Launch and lead unique outreach programs, in a mission to create a lasting impact! Challenging, but powerful.
Work alongside local teachers and help them by equipping them with the right teaching tools and monitoring techniques. You will also have the opportunity to create programs and activities for students which will facilitate their overall development.
Interested individuals can sign up for a marketing role in this project. You will be primarily marketing Hampi as a tourist destination. Along the same lines, you will be responsible for marketing all the initiatives that come under Rebuild Hampi. You will be responsible for content creation, video making, PR and digital marketing. However, more innovative methods are always welcome!

We are filled with the strong desire to make our volunteers’ efforts worth it. Hence, our volunteers and team make sure that the initiatives are constantly developing with time.
Charity creates dependency. We, on the other hand, want to create change which lasts. Our initiatives are designed so that the locals equip themselves with skills which make them self sustainable.
Just like the rest of India, Hampi suffers from gender inequality. This project is designed to provide new opportunities to women to work and earn a living,
all without completely disrupting their current lifestyle and practices.
Knowledge, A powerful tool that we use to change people for the better. It is not only conventionally limited to school teachings. You will run various campaigns, both for school goers and the wider community.
We do not believe that start-up ventures can only be for urban life. You will provide the tools to the people, in order to create newer business. Be it a grocery shop, or a service facility centre for farmers; we cover it all.
The creation of new businesses leads to the creation of new jobs, which provides employment opportunities to the locals. You will be directly facilitating the development of a well oiled local economy.
Apply your academic or professional experiences to develop them further for an enriching and rewarding experience which will reflect on your resume.
Clean Hampi, and Power Hampi. These are our two major initiatives focused on improving residents’ overall quality of life by focusing on health and hygiene.

At every step, we are there to help. We provide enough support so that you can make an impact in this community. From the host families to the project leaders, everyone is extremely experienced and would be glad to assist you in any problems you face
Look forward to what the day has to offer. Wake up in the ancient habitat of Hampi as you are served breakfast at 8:30. Freshen up, and get ready. By 9:30, join your fellow voluntourists for an exciting day. Get greeted by Novoto executives, as they take you to the common site for the work.
With respect to your project chosen and team allotted, work with your fellow collaborators coming from such diverse backgrounds.
At noon, we make a stop for lunch and refreshments. After lunch, we continue with project-specific work. Enjoy your day.
After 5 PM, the evening is kept free for a range of independent activities with fellow voluntourists. Occasionally, there shall be organised social events in the evening.
Finally, dinner is provided by the homestay. Rest and think about the fond memories created.

The project has been curated with the most observant prior due diligence. For the volunteering project of two weeks, you would be better off with a light packing. Carry comfortable footwear and light clothes. Make sure you carry the essentials- your passport, VISA, flashlights and Indian currency.
Oh also, leave some room in your suitcases. You never know what you might like to buy here!
